Inside/ outside: Text and weaving

Scan 14

To make this piece I used stamps to write different inner thoughts and feeling that I wouldn’t necessarily show to anyone and printed out a picture of myself then cut the both pieces into strips and began to weave them together, distorting the both the photo and the writing making it had to read. i think this is a effective way at expressing how inner emotions are hidden and not expressed easily. i would like to push this idea further using this imagery it would be interesting to create a painting incorporating the disjointed tiles of painted panels with a piece.

Inside/Outside: Text research

Scan 3Scan 4

This is the works I did exploring different font styles from basic font to the use of ink and gold leaf each creating different feelings and mood. I feel like the most effective is the ink and the gold which connote two completely different feeling. From this work I’m able to use what I’ve learnt from this when constructing a final piece as I think using text in my work is an interesting way of conveying human emotion onto the landscape.

Inside/ Outside- Mark Demsteader

Mark Demsteder is a well known British contemporary  figurative artist from Manchester. He utilises the mediums of charcoal  and gouache paint to create moving depictions of the human form. The muted colour and use of shadow and lighting create a downcast atmosphere full of emotion. This is what I would like to install within my portrait work when focusing on inner thought and emotion. Most of his work the model are look out of frame which creates a sense of longing or being lost wish could be something to consider when creating my pieces as it fits well with the concept behind my work.

Inside/ Outside: Self Portrait

Scan 10

In this piece of work I was purely concentrating on trying to capture the true emotion.I started by taking photographs of myself actually crying I then set out trying to visual express the emotion I was feeling. I used a ball point pen, watercolour, chalk and charcoal.I think the overall piece is strong visually but maybe freeing up the initial pen lines would create a more emotive piece of work.

Inside/ Outside : Hidden Emotion

Scan 9

I made this piece using charcoal and water colour paint for the smile.the image was taken from a photograph i took as a further exploration into how to convey different emotions in a single piece. although the i think the use of charcoal is effective at picking up the emotion I’m trying to convey and works well as a contrast to the watercolour lips. i think the whole composition of the piece comes across as tacky and need to look further into trying to show various emotion with my work.

Inside/ Outside

Scan 15

This is a piece i created of my friend, using a pen and cater colour. In this project I’m looking at how emotion can be conveyed in my work and using my interest in portraiture as a starting point I’m going to use this work as a starting point for further exploration into creating other pieces involving text and hidden emotion. I also think this portraits works well on it’s own as the water colour and pen marks work well together and the selected cold colours of blues and purple convey a sadness through the piece. I am keen to use portraiture within my final piece and this work will work towards a digital piece of some sort once i know exactly what i would like to show within my work.

Inside/ Outside: Hidden Emotion

Scan 8

The first of these pictures is an acrylic painting of my friend that I made to try and figure out how I could incorporate multiple emotions into one piece. I chose my friend to model for me because I think her features are very expressive and effective at expressing the emotions I needed. To create this outcome I photographed my friend then used my iPad to put a grid on the image to get the proportions of the face accurate.

For the sad section of the face I used watercolour pencils to create a subtle background, then used charcoal to draw the rest of the face.I think the colour (blue) and material used add to the sadness I’m trying to convey. As a contrast to this I used warm, vibrant colours to try show the outer emotion as for me they connote happiness.

Mask

Exploring Narrative

Within this four week project we looked at many different artists that who use animation and model making to create a narrative such as William Kentridge,Sarah woodfine and Ellen Macdonald. On the first week we had to work in group to create a William Kentridge style stop animation, by first creating the scene and characters from paper then using the iPad app Icananimate to create a short film.

The pictures of the Bathroom scene are on a separate post.

Masking Emotions

When creating the mask I wanted to emphasise the mouth to show A slight smile but didn’t want to make it to obvious because I feel like it would of made it look gimmicky. I really think some of these photographs work well and would like to paint from them because I think they would be interesting pieces that would add more distance between the roughly made mask and the outcome and I also think the lighting is interesting in some of these photographs and would be captured well in a larger scale painting.
