Linocut Prints

These are two lincuts that I created using the drawings from my journey. I wanted to make these quick prints to first get an idea of which direction I wanted to lead my work in. I will use these pieces as my starting point for a further exploration into pattern and different point making techniques.

Ouzoud Waterfalls

The Ouzoud Waterfalls was another significant event which I really wanted to document. I loved the day, the Waterfalls were spectacular and getting to see wild monkeys so close was an amazing experience. The area was beautiful and a rural escape from the city. I used pen and watercolour to quickly capture the likeness of the waterfall then used pencil to draw the monkey, adding watercolour and a paper cut to fine of the pages. I don’t usually draw animals and found it a struggle to draw but I really wanted to use it in some way was there were a huge part of the day.

The First Day of Marrakesh

After creating work whilst out there I decided I wanted to document in my sketch book the days or places that really stood out for me. I thought that the first day should really be remembered as it was the the first time coming into contact with the colour, pattern and people which made Marrakesh the incredible City that it is. From the moment we got of the plane we were greeted with pattern which could be seen everywhere. On the first night we went to a restaurant close to the Riad, which we went on a small tour of this is where the imagery of the lanterns came from. I Found the first day quite overwhelming with the amount of visual information an travelling and this is what I think I’m trying to get across in these pages, as well as trying to document the places themselves (the restaurant and the airport)

Drawings inspired by my journey

Theses are the initial sketches I created using the photographs from my journey, I focused on different sections of the images using a view finder, playing with the scale of the different textures and patterns. My main goal for this work was to loosen up my mark making and also try and highlight the different visual information that we are surrounded by on a day to day basis.

From here I would like to create various different prints which could then go towards the creation of a Kinetic piece which will try and convey the energy of busy City life and the experience you have when traveling through Cardiff.

Artwork inspired by the Majorelle Garden

The Majorelle gardens was a place that  really stood out for me during my trip to Marrakesh. It was such a peaceful and beautiful place and a complete contrast to the city outside the Garden’s walls. Within my work I first started by trying to reflect the experience using mixed media experimenting with colour using pigments that I bought while in Morocco.

After my return from Morocco  I began to create more detailed work using the photographs that I took. The vibrant blue against the raw beauty of the cacti and other plants is something that I wanted to show in these pieces which I used a fine liner and watercolour to create, also using salt to create different textures within the work.

These are a selection of photographs taken from a trip to the Majorelle gardens while in Marrakesh. A beautiful and exotic gardens which was bought by Yves saint Laurent when he moved to Morocco which his partner. I wanted to include these pictures on my blog because the vibrant blue and patterns seen within the cacti are a main inspiration for the body of work I’ve created to do with the beauty side of Morocco and I spent a long time drawing in the gardens.

Photos from my Journey around Cardiff

These are the photographs that I took while on a journey from my house to Roath park. my main focus for these photographs was to collate various different textures and patterns both natural and man made to then use within my subject work. Because I’m looking at the work of john piper who mainly focuses on buildings and the beach I began to look at the environment that surrounds me and trying to then adapt his abstract style to link with my own experience of the City and my own style of working. I will use these images to work from, creating drawings and utilising print making techniques.

Morocco- Colour and Pattern

While visiting Morocco I was overwhelmed by the amazing vibrant colour and pattern that could be seen across the city. even in the most deprived areas the attention to detail was everywhere. By the end of the trip I began to take all of the pattern for granted but on my return I really began to appreciate the true beauty of the city of Marrakesh. I really would like to incorporate the mix of the beauty and the roughness that I experienced while exploring Marrakesh within my on work.

Experimenting with Shape ( Church)

These are pieces I created using a view finder over the initial sketch I completed of the church. I wanted to focus on the line and shapes found within the work trying to look at different compositions. I used the colours that could be found within the photograph of the church and I think the muted earthy colours remind me of the similar colour palette to that of the John Pipers abstract work. Although this work is more of a direct response to Pipers work I would like to Push it further with the use of more detail, bringing in other techniques as well as painting, such as drawing with ink and printmaking. Also I think the work would be better as a larger series of pieces all centered around the city, scale could also be altered to make the work more effective.

Drawing from the City

Within a lot of john piper’s work he looks at churches and also has produced glass pieces etc. As I began to look at different cultures in my field project to Morocco, focusing on colour and pattern, I wanted to bring some of the experience into my subject work and began to focus on pattern completely within my work. With so many different places to look at with this new appreciation for my surroundings I decided to to look at a Church close to my house as an interesting starting point for creating various other work with the use of the patterns found within the pen drawing and from the photographs of the church. I also wanted to take inspiration from things that I pass walking on a day to day basis so I could show a kind of journey or timeline of the time spent here in Cardiff.13262077_10154141931908187_958655071_o
