Final Pieces for Subject

This is the final body of work that I produced for subject. I have been heavily influenced by colour and pattern and what to express a journey through the city by the use of small details and colours that can be seen here in Cardiff. I feel that by looking into John Pipers work it has opened up a whole new pathway for me artistically and I have been able to explore ways or working that i have not tried before.

Personal Statement

This year I have been focusing on the Urban Landscape in particular trying to embody the what its like to be travelling through Cardiff. I began through the exploration of my environment, collecting different found objects and taking photographs focusing on different compositions and pattern.

This began me on a journey trying to push the idea further by exploring abstraction through my paintings and prints, which helps to show my experience and the essence of Cardiff by the use of shape and colour rather than directly recording what I see around me.

Final piece

I chose to imagery taken from previous photographs of the city which I then used ink to create the gestural painting of the urban Landscape.

Ink drawing final pieces

These were originally just going to be experiments but I ended up really like them and think they work well together with my other pieces. I created the work inspired by the City and the work of Franz Kline. I really enjoyed creating this work as it enabled me to use more free marks to create energy within the work with to me expresses partly the feeling of the City. I also selected imagery in the work that is taken from a specific journey that I feel are marker points that I see while walking which I hope shows a through each piece.

Found object Sculptures

These are sculptures that are made from found objects from my journey back to my house from university. I used the same objects to create different compositions that reflect the City. I wanted to use Photoshop to edit these but I couldn’t access it o the computers, but I will work into these in the future and push this idea. I really like the outcome of this experimentation as I think it reflects the City in the way I wanted, by focusing on the small details of the environment.

I created some paintings from the pictures as I liked the compositions and wanted to explore the idea further without the use of Photoshop. I also think that I would like to carry on collecting objects and construct the sculptures properly.

Experimenting with Plaster

My original idea was to create a surface out of plaster which I could then use to create a piece using ink and spray paint but on the removal of this piece from the mold in shattered so I began to creates these pieces which can be seen above where I have experimented with ink trying to show the patterns of the urban landscape. Although I did was to use the whole mold I think that these pieces effectively describe what I’m trying to show and they are an interesting outcome.

Dexter Dalwood

I began to start looking at Dexter Dalwood’s work after becoming interested with his collage pieces as an interesting way of capturing an essence of a place which could work well with my work which focuses on the urban landscape and also the timeline of my journey throughout the time I’ve spent here in Cardiff. I also like his oil paintings especially ‘The crash’ pictured above as I think it not only has an interesting composition it has a sort of balance between the chaos represented by the smashed glass of the windscreen and the tranquility of the surroundings. This also puts the viewer in the position of the person who would be in the car which evokes an emotional response to the piece.

Per Kirkeby

Kirkeby is a well know artist from Denmark. His work mainly focuses on Danish landscape that he encountered and the female form. To do so he used a variety of different techniques including printmaking, painting and sculture using brick and bronze. His main influences have come firstly from pop art then in later on in his career he became influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Tachism which is a form of painting started in France similar to that of Abstract Expressionism.

I have decided to look at the work of Kirkeby for his paintings which a so expressive and the use of colour and marks is something I can bring into my own work when trying to depict the feelings of the city, also for his sculptures which echo the urban landscape and strong architectural themes that could be important when developing my work further in the future .

Hans Hofmann

Hans Hofmann was a highly recognised artist and know for his distinct style of Abstract Expressionism. I have decided to look into his work as i think his style and use of shape and colour is something I would like to use within my own practice. I  usually focus on painting in a more realistic style I want to look into other ways I could explore the medium of paint and the urban landscape. I enjoy the vibrant and playful use of colour and the way he uses rectangular forms creating depth, concentrating on the structure and colour relationships between each piece.

Tomma Abts

I have decided to look at the work of the 2006 Turner prize winner Tomma Abts. Abts uses acrylic and oil on canvas which are always the same size of 48 x 38 cm. this creates the only constraint that she wishes to implement within her work.

I am inspired by her work as although she uses no source material and works straight onto the canvases in layers to eventually arrive and the forms of the finished pieces. I am interested in the way she plays with composition and looks closely at intimate relationship between colour and space  to create work that is linked in some sort of way to each collection but also creating work that has a movement and an energy which is something would like to encompass in my own practice.
