City- Print Project
Posted: February 28, 2015 Filed under: Subject | Tags: Documentation 1 CommentThis is all the work that I have created during the Tuesday print project, working towards a final piece.I was trying to explore the theme of city by looking at the small details like the different textures and things that usually would get over looked.
City- Gerhard Richter
Posted: February 26, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation 1 CommentI wanted to look at the Abstract work of Gerhard Richter, a German visual artist (born 1932) because I think the technique he uses to create movement and a vibrancy by picking out colours from the city photography used as a background. I also like his other large, grey-scale Cityscapes that from close up obscure into complete Abstractism. Which is something that I haven’t explored before within my own work and I think would be an interesting way to explore the ideas of capturing the movement found within the City.
City- Catherine Yass
Posted: February 26, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation Leave a commentCatherine Yass is an English-born contemporary artist (born 1963.) Known for her brightly coloured photography which is usually mounted onto light boxes, highlighting her use of positive and negative imagery.
I decided to look at Yass’ work because I think that she captures the personality of a City in her photography by focusing on the lights and fast-moving pace which is then exaggerated by the way she edits her work. This has inspired me to experiment with colour when exploring the theme of city as I believe it is an integral characteristic that will help me illustrate the busy, vibrant atmosphere felt in cities across the world.
City: Nan Goldin
Posted: February 25, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation 1 CommentNan Goldin is an american photographer born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. She began to take photographs when she was a teenager, Goldin’s work is an exploration of the subcultures that surrounded her, which started during her study at the school of the museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Goldin’s work began by taking black and white photographs of drag queens, she then started to capture images of her friends that were dying from AIDS.
I am looking at Nan Goldin’s work as I think it is a strong representation of “Hidden City.” Her pieces are emotion filled scenes, documenting the lives around her and shows a side to the city that you wouldn’t necessarily know about.
City Group Project
Posted: February 24, 2015 Filed under: Field Leave a commentFor the field project everyone was split into small groups with people from different subject areas and given the task of creating a piece, whatever that may be within 3 weeks.
After being put into groups we decided to show research and work that we had done on a individual basis on the topic of City.
After talking about our ideas we noticed we were focusing on migration, traveling through the city and power and technology. We have come up with the idea of creating an installation piece showing the different layers of the City, from the sewer systems to transport routes.
Ater this decision we felt it was important to do more focused research to gain a deeper understanding of the layers involved and also Artists and Designers which have tackled this theme. It will be interesting to see how this group work develops and i look forward to the different ideas that could form and we all come from different artistic backgrounds.
Pinhole Photography Work Shop
Posted: February 18, 2015 Filed under: Subject | Tags: Documentation Leave a commentThis term I decided to go to a workshop in pinhole photography because until recently photography isn’t something I was that interested and I know I would like to learn about the different types of photography more and the different techniques. This workshop was something I hadn’t done before and I found it interesting to learn a completely new technique.
Group Project:Migration
Posted: February 17, 2015 Filed under: Subject Leave a commentOverall the night out was a success and we had alot of source material to work from. After looking at what we collected we decided to use the drawings as our final piece because it shows the coming together of people in a fun and engaging way which accentuates the variation of style and thought. I also think the photographs that were taken on the night were also effective at showing migration with the interesting streaks of light and blurring where the camera has tried to capture the movement so I’ve decided to use some within my own personal work.
City- Pieces created in response to personal research

Posted: February 9, 2015 Filed under: Subject 1 CommentFor my group project we are looking at migration. We decided that we are going to look at migration on a personal level and try and create a piece that shows how we as students have come together from across the UK to Cardiff and concentrate more on the social aspect of Migration. We organised a night out in Cardiff with other students within CSAD so each member of my group could document their night by taking photographs. We also wanted everyone to have a part in the night to try and show this coming together of people so we asked everyone who came to draw anything and write down things that they miss about home.
