Goth Sports Day- Egg and spoon (continued)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These are the completed pieces for the Egg and Spoon race I made the eyes by wrapping mod-roc around small plastic balls, which had bells in that were originally cat toys. I used them as the starting point to save time and also make them all uniform in size. the bells will also add an extra element to the pieces. to finish of the eyes I used acrylic paint to add detail and varnish so they have a gloss finish. to display the eyes I will use a egg box which I have spray painted black to make another Gothic connection to the traditional sports day game.

Now I have finished the bone spoons I decided that I would keep three of them more simple and only add the detail of the blood. So there are three with demonic symbolism and three without.

by keeping all the colours similar in the work that I have completed for goth sports day I feel like it creates a theme and also makes everything look connected, something that I really wanted achieve within my work.

Goth Sports Day- Egg and Spoon race

For the Goth Sports day we decided in various different games that we would each then begin to create things for the games. My idea was to use the classic children’s sports day game, the egg and spoon race but make it with a Gothic twist. In a pair we began to think of ideas to try and make the game as Gothic and gruesome as possible.

I began by creating the bones above using wooden spoons and mod roc. When it came to painting them I wanted there to be a similarity to  the colour palette, such as black, white and red. To that of a painting and other work that is going to be presented as part of goth sports day. These bones will be the spoons used in the race to carry the eyeballs, which is next idea idea we had to change it from just a normal sports day game.

Goth Sports Day- Ghost Painting

This is the painting that I’ve created for the Goth sports day. I have used the same colour scheme (black, white and red ) as the pieces I made for the egg and spoon race and completed used acrylic paint. My idea with this painting is that people can put their head in the hole, I made using a drill, to take photographs. My main inspiration for the work was  looking at the type of things you would find at a pier or a village fete also I began to look at vintage photographs and how I could change the traditional idea into something more Gothic.

The idea for the colours used and the way i designed each piece including the spoons stemmed from looking at the work of Shepard fairey who is a contemporary american street artists who is well know for appropriating imagery and turning it into his own, I like the colours he uses and I think within my own work I would like to use a similar palette using limited range of Gothic colours such as red to draw attention and also connect each piece is made together.

Robert Delauny

I began to look at the work of Delauny after the four week workshop that I had with Tom, looking into creating Kinetic Sculptures. I think his work and the work that I did for the workshop links well and something that I would like to possibly bring back into my own practice. Although I am not used to creating abstract work, His use of bold colour and shape is something that I could use within my work merging together the abstract with the more representational view of the City.

Key Concept :Appropriation

Within this lecture we were discussing how of instead of the creating original pieces artists such as Barbara Kruger and  Robert Rauschenberg began to collate or imagery or part of existing imagery within their work, changing its original context and meaning behind the work. This is something that I found interesting and could help me when creating work from the City. I have used imagery from and found objects to create sculptures, exploring the ideas of appropriation.

Mixed media response to the City

This is a mixed media piece I made using a variety of techniques. I first began by drawing different parts of buildings that have an interesting pattern but also buildings I see all the time, like the church imagery which can be seen in other work, that could represent a specific journey that I take. After beginning drawing and to collage different parts together I then began to add prints like mono print to capture the smaller details. Finishing the piece with ink and spray paint to add and extra element which I think helps to show my response to the urban environment. I find that the grouping together of different techniques and imagery from across the city helps to show my journey through the environment which is something I’ve become interested in showing within my work.

Kinetic sculpture workshop

This is the final outcome of a four week project with Tom. It began by first showing us work by various different artists such a Alexander Calder. Then we started with the construction of the wooden background and the different size cogs which would eventually become the Kinetic sculpture. After figuring out the sizes I wanted to use I began to spray paint each component taking inspiration from my subject work and the work of John piper and Frank stella, deciding to use a vibrant colour scheme, focusing on the relationships between different colours. I wanted to create a small piece to get used to the creation of the moving components. After the completion of this project I became inspired to create a larger piece which could be used within my subject work as a way of emulating the movement of the city, using printmaking techniques to add various patterns of the urban landscape.

Morocco- Reflection PDP

The trip to Morocco was the second field trip that I went on, focusing mainly on pattern and colour throughout the 5 week field project. Overall it was an eye opening experience which has effected me in ways I didn’t expect. Although it was for only one week it was filled with many experiences and so much inspiration which I could bring back to use within my work.

One of the main things which I have taken from my trip to Marrakesh has the incredible amount of pattern and colour which could be seen within the city and by having a brief it made me really focus on the what I was seeing all around me. This is something which I then took home with me as I noticed I was looking at my surrounding in a different way looking at the pattern and details which I would of never usually focused on before.

By gaining this experience it to only helped me with creating work for the field project but also my work within subject. On my return from Marrakesh I became truly inspired by looking into architecture and trying to understand colour relationships and composition in a completely new light. This has helped me with pushing my subject work further and gave me a direction in which I wanted to go within my work, which before the trip I was struggling to find what I wanted to do within my work.

It was only after my return from morocco that I really began to understand the impact of the trip on my whole outlook of my working practice and started to really appreciate the exposure not only to the beauty but the poverty and the completely new way of life which has inspired the body of research I completed for my dissertation plan also.

Something which I really enjoyed throughout the field project was how I was with a group of students mostly from textiles and designer maker and staff which were from disciplines I would usually be involved with, this helped when sharing my ideas as I could hear peoples opinions and ideas which were not in my subject area which I found interesting a made me think more about how my ideas could relate to a wider audience. I appreciated having influences from other subject areas as I began to utilise techniques which I wouldn’t of thought out to complete my work such as stitch techniques and dying.

Overall the experience of travelling to Morocco and seeing not only the beautiful side of the city but was able to glimpse at the real way of life for the people that live there is something that I feel has not only influenced my current practice but will continue to inspire me as I now no longer take my surroundings for granted and have really discovered a new way of seeing beauty within the ordinary and a  passion for the exploration of my own journey through the use of a variety of mediums.

Frank Stella

The work of Frank Stella is another inspiration within my work aswell as the work of John piper. He uses a variety of different media to complete hes work including sculpture, print and painting.I began to look at his work when looking at other Artists who use Hard-edge abstraction in their work. His main focus is on colour, shape and scale and links well with my own work as I’m trying to be more aware of colour relationships and scale which I could then incorporate within my own john piper inspired artwork centered around the textures and patterns around the City.

Continuous line drawing

This is an example of a continuous line drawing which I created, I think the quick and free styles suites perfectly to try and capture the energy of walking through Marrakesh. I added different shades to add layers to the work with I think helps make the work look more three dimensional.
