SKETCHBOOK Paintings

DSC_0396DSC_0122

These are two practice paintings from my sketchbook the first want was a  practice in painting people and experimenting with different layers and painting techniques and the second one was after thinking about the ethical issues of using a picture of someone how I could disguise that I also think that the face isn’t the most important thing about the image and for an audience to picture themselves in the situation it might be easier to mask the face.

Painting on canvas

the images above a from painting i completed on, just to get used to painting on canvas again in preparation to painting for within my work as I think it will be the direction in which i want to go in to complete my work.

The first image is from the Taff trail i wanted the make it so it was unclear what you were seeing so it was almost like a snapshot from my memory rather than anything in particular. the second piece I created i wanted to experiment with different materials including ink, charcoal and cigarette ash. Overall I think that the materials I used are effective especially the use of ash as I think links well to the homeless,

Acetate Experiments

These are some of the acetate piece which I used for the layered experiments discussed on a previous post. in this work I wanted to focus on something that is seen as a very much home tradition such as embroidery and focus on something with is completely the opposite, the homeless. My main inspiration behind this work was Grayson Perry and much of his work look beautiful and ornate until a closer look when his work deal with such contemporary topics such as teen pregnancy.

After discussing this work with lecturers and other people on my course I decided that they are not as effective as they could be and maybe using a different material other than the acetate would be more effective, such as a cushion. But overall the idea of picturing something beautiful to highlight a much darker topic such as homeless is something that I would like to continue within my practice using different media i.e. painting.

Mixed media found object college

After finding the collection of homeless mans thing I began to think about what would you tend to see when you see someone who is homeless and also what I would want if I was homeless. One of the main things I could think of was smoking and how important that would be to someone who is a homeless smoker or drug user also. to an extant this would be important to me being a smoker myself. I wanted the work just to be an experiment into using found objects with my drawing and house to incorporate the two together to create a cohesive piece.

Linocut Prints

These are just a few of the linocut experiments I have complete just texting out different materials that I could print on that could link to the homeless for example a book, which seems to be a popular item for those living on the street, or found materials from my journey such as the brown paper seen in the lat photograph. I don’t think on their on the image I used for the print is very strong as I was only test out the various material but I think that the layered one is  effective at capturing a certain energy felt within the city.
