City- Robert Rauschenberg
Posted: January 8, 2016 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation 1 CommentI have decided to look at the work of Robert Rauschenberg, who was an American painter and graphic artist. (Born 1925)
I am looking at his ‘combines’ in particular, which he became well-known for in the 1950’s. Combines are artwork that incorporates different objects to create work that is a cross between a painting and sculpture. This technique of utilising ephemera to create work would well with the theme of City by creating work using found objects it would enable be to compose a complete experience of the atmosphere felt within a city by encompassing a variety of senses instead of just sight.
Field Project
Posted: March 31, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Documentation 1 CommentThis was the initial design that the group and I came up with for the piece. Focusing on different layers that make up the city.We decided to look at 4 main layers where are: telephone wires, travel routes (above ground ), water/sewer pipes and underground train routes
these are the final designs showing the scale of what we would have liked to of completed if we had a longer period and the lay out. To create the piece we each decided to focus on one layer and to bringing it together.
This is the outcome of our work, overall I think the pieces came together effectively as works well as an over piece, but would have been better if the scale was much larger so it could have been more interactive with the piece but obviously that could not have been done in such a short space of time and I think we group worked well together to create the representation of our final idea.
City- Gerhard Richter
Posted: February 26, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation 1 CommentI wanted to look at the Abstract work of Gerhard Richter, a German visual artist (born 1932) because I think the technique he uses to create movement and a vibrancy by picking out colours from the city photography used as a background. I also like his other large, grey-scale Cityscapes that from close up obscure into complete Abstractism. Which is something that I haven’t explored before within my own work and I think would be an interesting way to explore the ideas of capturing the movement found within the City.
City- Catherine Yass
Posted: February 26, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation Leave a commentCatherine Yass is an English-born contemporary artist (born 1963.) Known for her brightly coloured photography which is usually mounted onto light boxes, highlighting her use of positive and negative imagery.
I decided to look at Yass’ work because I think that she captures the personality of a City in her photography by focusing on the lights and fast-moving pace which is then exaggerated by the way she edits her work. This has inspired me to experiment with colour when exploring the theme of city as I believe it is an integral characteristic that will help me illustrate the busy, vibrant atmosphere felt in cities across the world.
City: Nan Goldin
Posted: February 25, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation 1 CommentNan Goldin is an american photographer born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. She began to take photographs when she was a teenager, Goldin’s work is an exploration of the subcultures that surrounded her, which started during her study at the school of the museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Goldin’s work began by taking black and white photographs of drag queens, she then started to capture images of her friends that were dying from AIDS.
I am looking at Nan Goldin’s work as I think it is a strong representation of “Hidden City.” Her pieces are emotion filled scenes, documenting the lives around her and shows a side to the city that you wouldn’t necessarily know about.
City Group Project
Posted: February 24, 2015 Filed under: Field Leave a commentFor the field project everyone was split into small groups with people from different subject areas and given the task of creating a piece, whatever that may be within 3 weeks.
After being put into groups we decided to show research and work that we had done on a individual basis on the topic of City.
After talking about our ideas we noticed we were focusing on migration, traveling through the city and power and technology. We have come up with the idea of creating an installation piece showing the different layers of the City, from the sewer systems to transport routes.
Ater this decision we felt it was important to do more focused research to gain a deeper understanding of the layers involved and also Artists and Designers which have tackled this theme. It will be interesting to see how this group work develops and i look forward to the different ideas that could form and we all come from different artistic backgrounds.
City- Pieces created in response to personal research
Posted: February 11, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Documentation 1 CommentAi Weiwei
Posted: February 5, 2015 Filed under: Field | Tags: Contextualisation Leave a commentAi Weiwei is a contemporary artist from China, born in 1957 working/living in Beijing.the work I was looking at in particular for this migration project was Fairytale where Ai Weiwei invite do mainland Chinese residents to Kassel in Germany to take part in Documenta 12. A total of 1001 Chinese citizens traveled to Germany for the event, most traveling out of China for the first time.focusing on questions involving identity, memory, and the possibility of a cultural dialogue. I think this project links well within my group project when we’re are looking how people migrate in and to cities and the emotions linked to the transition.
