Inside/Outside: Collage experiments

To create an extra layer to the portrait pieces I’ve been making. I formed the paper cut on the left of a smashed mirror which I chose because of the links between a person’s mirror reflection and the way people portray themselves to others. To create the piece on the right I added ripped sections my self portrait which I had already digitally added text to as seen by the piece in the middle .This technique creates a distorted view of the portrait and enhances the smashed mirror behind, expressing broken and disjointed emotions with the added content of the illegible text of my inner emotion creates the connection to Inside/Outside.

These are two pieces I made from the paper cut of the smashed mirror and the use of my portrait. To make these pieces I scanned the paper cut into my computer then edited the colour of the glass shards, exploring how colour can effect what emotion is being shown. For the first piece I overlaid a tracing paper copy of my portrait over the smashed mirror piece, although simple I think the outcome is bold and effective.

For the second piece I decide to cut up the portrait and add it to the smashed mirror pear cut which I think is most effective at showing inner and outer emotions and the feeling of insecurity which is part of human nature.

This piece is another college using tracing paper layers of landscape and portrait. I cut out i square hiding the face’s main  feature, the eyes, which I feel are the most emotive part of the face therefore hiding the emotion. This also reminds me of the censoring of images that are indecent etc. which adds to the idea of hiding our true emotions.

I then mounted the work onto cardboard and ripped into it adding texture to the work and emphasising the destructive nature of human emotion. Like previous work I added a flower from where the imagery was taken from to try and recreate the environment that I was experiencing.

Inside/ Outside : Portrait on tracing paper

this is a portrait I made of myself using pen and ink onto tracing paper and is what inspired me to create a series of different pieces using the same imagery but employing different techniques. This is what will help me when deciding on the composition, colour and content when considering the creation of a final piece. for my Inside/ Outside- Emotions project.

Inside/ Outside : Digital Pieces

Scan 25Scan 21

To create these pieces I scanned  a copy of the original portrait on tracing paper into my computer then added different layers of text and photos of the river to try and show how a certain outside places has emotional links to our inner emotions. The starting point to this work is the piece with no text but I felt like the piece needed more and the text adds a sentimental substance to the work.

In this piece I am experimenting with the use of tracing paper as a complete layer as it enables me to express a large amount of emotive text onto the piece and still you are able to make out the portrait under the transparent layer. I like the use of tracing paper as its lets more than one layer to be seen at one time. To make the piece more effective i think it would be better to instead of using it as a complete layer, use it in smaller section or use less text to make what I’m I’m trying to show clearer to understand.

Inside/ Outside- John Stezaker

John Stezaker was an English conceptual artists born in 1949. In his work he uses found images from magazines, postcards, books etc. which he then creates collages with, changing the context of the original images to create his own clever meanings through the use of juxtaposition. I especially like Stezaker’s Marriage series, where he couples  famous male and female faces of vintage Hollywood together to create disjointed Hybrids. The techniques he encompasses in his work could be an interesting way at conveying multiple emotions and also at creating a relationship between the landscape and a particular memory or feeling by using personal images instead of famous imagery from popular culture. john_stezaker_4 john-stezaker-film-portraitix-xl

Inside/Outside : Collage

Scan 19

I created this piece by printing out two copies of the portrait, one in black and white on normal cartridge pager and the other in colour onto tracing paper.Using the black and white copy as the base I used strips of the tracing paper to mask the inner emotion. To add to the piece of work I used strips of paper with blue watercolours dripped down then and section of acrylic to support the sadness that is being exposed in the portrait itself. From here I would like to look into cutting and ripping into my work to reveal different emotions and use of tracing paper and different layers to my work as I think it works well visually with my concept.

Inside/Outside : Portrait Collage

Scan 16

this is a piece i made using the portrait i made on the previous blog post which i then cut out panels, making the face and revealing landscapes from around llandaff. when i then added text onto the piece, expressing contrasting inner and outer emotions. to complete the piece i added plants from the journey i took when finding the imagery from around the area.which i think adds another layer to the piece and creates more of a connection to the memory by the utilisation of the different visual techniques it conveys a very personal, somber nostalgia view into somebody’s life.

Inside/ outside: Text and weaving

Scan 14

To make this piece I used stamps to write different inner thoughts and feeling that I wouldn’t necessarily show to anyone and printed out a picture of myself then cut the both pieces into strips and began to weave them together, distorting the both the photo and the writing making it had to read. i think this is a effective way at expressing how inner emotions are hidden and not expressed easily. i would like to push this idea further using this imagery it would be interesting to create a painting incorporating the disjointed tiles of painted panels with a piece.

Inside/Outside: Text research

Scan 3Scan 4

This is the works I did exploring different font styles from basic font to the use of ink and gold leaf each creating different feelings and mood. I feel like the most effective is the ink and the gold which connote two completely different feeling. From this work I’m able to use what I’ve learnt from this when constructing a final piece as I think using text in my work is an interesting way of conveying human emotion onto the landscape.
